Plenty of dishwashers and some washers have a water-hardness setting buried in the menu, usually left at whatever the factory chose. When a model offers it, we set it to suit the local supply. On refrigerators, an overdue water filter is the cheapest suspect for weak dispensing and poor ice, and it gets checked first.
